8:35a                  Economic and Manufacturing Outlook by Bill Strauss, Senior Economist and Economic Advisor in the Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago                                                     

William A. Strauss is a Senior Economist and Economic Advisor in the
Economic Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, which he joined in 1982.  His chief responsibilities include analyzing the current performance of both the Midwest economy and the manufacturing sector for use in monetary policy.  He organizes the Bank's Economic Outlook Symposium and Automotive Outlook Symposium. In addition, he conducts industrial and manufacturing roundtables throughout the year.

Mr. Strauss earned a B.A. in economics and geography from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an M.A. in economics from Northwestern University.  Mr. Strauss is a Certified Business Economist™ (CBE), the certification in business economics and data analytics developed by the National Association for Business Economics.  It documents a professional’s accomplishment, experience, abilities, and demonstrates mastery of the body of knowledge critical for a successful career in the field of economics and data analytics.

He has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola University Chicago and Webster University in Chicago.  He currently teaches at DePaul University Kellstadt Graduate School of Business, and at the University of Chicago Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies.  At the latter institution, he was named winner of the 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award in the Business and Professional Programs.  He was recognized by the University at Buffalo as a Distinguished Alumni in 2012.                                  

9:20-9:35a        Presentation by of David Lewis, Vice President – Global Taxes & Assistant Treasurer, Eli Lilly & Company

David Lewis is the Vice President-Global Taxes and Assistant Treasurer at Eli Lilly and Company, where he has been employed for 28 years. Dave is married to Lynn and has three children. He is a graduate of Wabash College and I.U. School of Law-Bloomington. Mr. Lewis recently chaired the Indy Chamber’s Indianapolis Regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) task force. He serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Tax Foundation, and on the Board of Trustees at Wabash College. Dave is actively involved in tax reform efforts in Washington, D.C., leading several coalitions. He was active with the Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee in 2012, serving on its Executive Committee and as a primary fundraiser. Most recently, he served on the Executive Committee and as Funding Chair of the 100th Running Host Committee. In the past, he has co-chaired several Indy Chamber initiatives.

Charles is the author of Getting Better: Why Global Development is Succeeding and How We Can Improve the World Even More (Basic Books: 2011), The Upside of Down: Why the Rise of the Rest is Great for the West (Basic Books: 2014) and Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Utility: Happiness in Philosophical and Economic Thought (St Andrews, 2006).

Charles spent fifteen years as an economist in the World Bank, travelling the planet from Baghdad and Kabul to Brasilia and Beijing. He now works at a Washington DC think tank, the Center for Global Development, where he researches and advocates for policies governing investment, trade, technology and migration that would be good for both developing and industrialized countries alike. In addition, he is a widely cited researcher on the economics of happiness. He has a history degree from Cambridge University and Master’s degrees from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.

Charles is a contributing editor at Foreign Policy magazine and was a columnist for Bloomberg BusinessWeek. He writes on global development and its impact on the US. He has also written for outlets including the Wall Street Journal, Politico, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, Time, the Guardian, Vex, Salon and CNN.
