CareSource Indiana Joins Organizations Lighting Monument Circle Green for Mental Health Awareness Month

CareSource is sponsoring Mental Health America Indiana (MHAI), the Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers (ICCMHC), and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Indiana in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month. The organizations are shining a light on the importance of mental health and the resources available to Hoosiers, with events including the lighting of Monument Circle in Indianapolis green from May 10 to May 16.

"As a health care organization, CareSource understands the importance of addressing mental health concerns and providing support to those who need it. That's why we proudly support Mental Health America of Indiana, the Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers and the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) Indiana through our sponsorship,” said Steve Smitherman, president of CareSource Indiana. “We believe in their mission to raise awareness for mental health and provide resources for those in crisis, especially during these challenging times. We encourage all local businesses and offices to join us in turning Indiana green for Mental Health Awareness Month and show their support for mental health."

Mental Health Awareness Month has been recognized in the United States in the month of May since 1949. This year, ICCMHC, MHAI, and NAMI hope to bring awareness and attention to the resources they offer for Hoosiers. 1 in 5 U.S. adults and 1 in 6 U.S. youth experience mental illness each year, and less than half of them receive treatment.

As part of its culture, CareSource includes encouraging open conversations about mental health in the workplace

"CareSource prioritizes the well-being of our staff and recognize the importance of focusing on mental health," said Kristi Carney, director of behavioral health of CareSource Indiana. "We want our employees to feel supported, and that starts with creating a workplace culture where open conversations about mental health are encouraged, just like we discuss physical health. Having discussions about mental health in the workplace can build trust, connectedness, and credibility among team members."
