Deeply Ingrained Named a Stanley Black & Decker Makers Grant Recipient

January 17, 2023 (INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Stanley Black & Decker (NYSE: SWK) announced the recipients of its second Global Impact Challenge. Deeply Ingrained (formerly Socially Distant Woodworking) is honored to have been named as a Makers Grant Recipient for our efforts to provide youth and underserved individuals with woodworking opportunities that develop creativity, learning, and skill-building.

Deeply Ingrained’s Woodshop on Wheels (WOW) provides hands-on woodworking workshops serving underserved youth in the Indianapolis area.  These workshops allow participants to tour and work in a well-equipped workshop while developing personal and technical skills without leaving their neighborhood.  Its programming guides participants through designing, building, and finishing a wood project.  At the end of the program, participants leave with a finished project and new personal achievements.

“We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts to narrow these industry gaps by sharing our excitement of working with our hands and minds of underserved youth of Greater Indianapolis,” states David Haughs, Founding Executive Director at Deeply Ingrained. “It is a great honor to be selected by Stanley Black & Decker as a Makers Grant recipient.  Through this support and the passion of our employees, volunteers, and community partners, I expect nothing short of greatness and a large step toward closing these gaps in our community.”

In 2021, the Global Impact Challenge grant program will award up to $25 million in grant funding over five years to nonprofits funding over five years to nonprofits that are supporting trade workforce development initiatives in the construction and manufacturing sectors. With the first applications submitted in 2022, 182 entrants were evaluated based on the number of people served, outcomes projected, sustainable impact, depth of programs, and diversity, among many other considerations. Deeply Ingrained was awarded the largest grant in the organization’s young history as one of 91 organizations to help skill and reskill roughly 210,448 makers throughout 2023.

Deeply Ingrained is aware of our society's challenges in manufacturing, skilled trades, and construction.  To address these gaps in our community, Deeply Ingrained is expanding its programming in 2023 to offer workforce development to underserved teens and young adults.  Utilizing its small-scale manufacturing environment to produce monthly projects and prep materials for WOW, Deeply Ingrained is uniquely positioned to provide paid, hands-on manufacturing and skilled trades introductions while serving the community.

“Stanley Black & Decker is immensely proud to support Deeply Ingrained as they work to skill and reskill the next generation of trade professionals,” said Stanley Black & Decker Corporate Responsibility Officer Deb Geyer. “Currently, in the U.S., there are an estimated 650,000 open construction jobs and 10 million unfilled manufacturing jobs globally. Our purpose is to support ‘Those Who Make the World,’ and being able to fund educational programs and non-profits that are revitalizing trade careers directly connects to our core mission. Thanks to this year’s Makers Grant Recipients, together we will be one step closer to closing the trade skills gap.”
