The Loan Specialist and Portfolio Manager is responsible for evaluating, processing and managing small business loan applications as well as overseeing and managing loan portfolio to ensure strong performance and compliance with policies.
The Loan Specialist and Portfolio Manager work closely with applicants to collect their documents and assess their financial needs, ensuring responsible lending practices.
The Loan Specialist and Portfolio Manager monitors loan repayments, assesses portfolio risk, works with borrowers to ensure successful loan performance, and implements strategies to improve portfolio quality (i.e Loan Modification Agreements or other arrangements).
Requirements
Loan Specialist Duties
- Maintain strong relationships with borrowers to provide ongoing support and technical assistance.
- Review loan application, conduct credit and risk assessment and make lending recommendations
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date loan files and documentation
- Ensure adherence to internal credit policies and external regulatory requirements.
- Assist in the preparation of reports for funders, investors, and board members or audits (ie. yearly SBA audit)
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date borrower loan files and documentation.
- Ensure adherence to internal credit policies and external regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of credit policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with the lending team to enhance underwriting, loan servicing, and risk assessment processes.
- Identify opportunities for improving efficiency, borrower experience, and portfolio performance.
- Work closely with the Sales team, BOI team and external partners to support borrowers in improving financial health and business growth.
- Performs pre-and post-loan coaching
Portfolio Manager Duties
- Monitor and manage the performance of the loan portfolio to minimize risk and ensure sustainability.
- Conduct regular portfolio reviews to identify potential risks and delinquency trends.
- Develop and implement proactive risk management strategies, including borrower engagement and intervention plans.
- Recommend and implement restructuring strategies for distressed loans.
- Oversee loan repayment schedules, invoices, and collections processes to ensure timely payments.
- Manage delinquency and workout plans, including direct engagement with borrowers on repayment strategies.
- Work with legal counsel and leadership on loan modifications, restructurings, and collections when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, economics, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in loan portfolio management, commercial lending, or credit risk management.
- Knowledge of small business lending, financial analysis, and loan servicing practices.
- Experience working with CDFIs, community banks, or mission-driven lenders.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess financial statements and risk indicators.
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
- Proficiency in loan management software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
