Taft’s Energy Team Expands With Addition of Alson and Pashos

Taft is pleased to welcome Mark Alson and Kay Pashos as partners in the firm’s Energy practice group in Indianapolis. Alson and Pashos bring significant experience representing energy and utility companies before state regulatory agencies to Taft’s existing Energy team. They join Taft’s attorneys and other professionals across the firm who collaborate to serve energy market participants.

“We are pleased to welcome Kay and Mark to Taft. The addition supports our efforts to further increase our bench strength and overall presence in the energy and utility sectors,” said Elizabeth Brama, chair of Taft’s Energy practice group.

Alson’s energy practice centers on assisting public utilities and related entities with regulatory matters before state public service commissions, primarily the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. He has represented electric, gas, water, and wastewater clients in a range of regulatory matters, including base rate cases, tracker adjustments, mergers and acquisitions, energy efficiency and demand side management proceedings, certificate of territorial proceedings, special contracts, regulatory ordinances, and declination of jurisdiction cases. Alson has also assisted with renewable energy projects, such as solar, wind, and battery energy storage systems.

Pashos has more than 30 years of experience representing energy and water utilities before state public utility commissions in a variety of proceedings, such as rate cases, innovative rate design cases, fuel and purchased power proceedings, CPCN cases, environmental compliance cases, infrastructure cases, prudence cases, smart grid, energy efficiency and demand response matters, mergers and acquisitions, and RTO issues. Her career has included serving both as an in-house lawyer (for Cinergy, PSI Energy, and Alliant Energy) and an outside lawyer, including serving as general counsel for Cinergy’s Regulated Businesses and as deputy general counsel for Alliant Energy. She has also served in several executive positions with Cinergy, Duke Energy, and Alliant Energy, notably: president of Duke Energy Indiana (PSI Energy), vice president of Regulatory Strategy for Duke Energy, and vice president of Regulatory Affairs for Alliant Energy.

“We look forward to expanding and offering more capabilities and support to our clients through Taft’s platform and sophisticated Energy group,” said Pashos. “Taft is a great fit for us, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work with a diverse and talented team of attorneys across the firm’s footprint.”

Taft’s Energy team has deep experience providing full-service legal representation to a broad range of energy providers, public utilities, transmission-only utilities, independent power producers, developers, regional entities, and other energy-sector participants. With a focus on serving clients in the Midwest and Southwest United States, the group represents clients in the energy industry from regulatory permitting and approvals, contested case proceedings before federal and state administrative agencies, litigation and appeals, and energy transactions.
