January is National Mentor Month—this is a time when organizations across the country highlight the power of mentoring to transform lives. Here in Indianapolis, Starfish Initiative is proud to celebrate this month by recognizing our dedicated volunteer mentors and inviting more community members to join our mission.
Starfish Initiative pairs caring adult mentors with high school students—many of whom are 21st Century Scholars—who face academic and social barriers to success. Our mentors provide consistent support, guidance, and encouragement, helping students build the confidence and skills they need to graduate high school and go on to college or other postsecondary opportunities. Mentors and students typically meet or connect at least once a month, fostering meaningful relationships that often last well beyond high school graduation.
The results speak for themselves: Starfish scholars boast consistently high graduation and college attendance rates, helping to shape tomorrow’s leaders right here in Indianapolis. Yet our need for mentors has never been greater. As we expand our program to serve more students, we’re seeking volunteer mentors from all walks of life—professionals, retirees, and community members—who are willing to share their time and life experiences.
