Propylaeum Awarded Coveted National DAR Grant

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Indianapolis Propylaeum announces that it is the grateful the recipient of grant funding by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) for aid in the restoration of the Propylaeum’s historic Carriage House.

The Carriage House is a prominent fixture on 14th Street in the Old Northside neighborhood of Indianapolis and has been the site of arts and culture events since 1923. Historic Preservation is a part of the mission of the Propylaeum and the NSDAR grant supports the ongoing efforts to restore the National Register of Historic Places property for use by the community.

“The Indianapolis Propylaeum is an important part of our Indianapolis history — and women's history. The Propylaeum remains a strong community pillar of the Old Northside historic neighborhood,” according to Jennifer Jackson Capps, Regent of the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter DAR, a local sponsor for the grant. "The Propylaeum's Carriage House is an asset to the community and deserves to be restored."

The Carriage House served as the first location of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis 100 years ago and is an essential component of continuing the Propylaeum's mission to support women and community enrichment through its programs. The oversized Carriage House is the only one of its kind in the area and is a vital part of the Propylaeum's historic property.

The Indianapolis Propylaeum is integral and inspirational to the Indianapolis community. The organization was founded 136 years ago with a mission to connect and celebrate women by encouraging leadership, fellowship, arts and culture. The founders chose the name "Propylaeum" from the Greek propylaea, or gateway, to signify that the organization would be a gateway to culture for Indianapolis.

The Propylaeum’s home for over 100 years has been the Schmidt-Schaf mansion at 1410 North Delaware Street where The Propylaeum continues to be a welcoming place for women to use their voice, inspire leadership, and continue the legacy of women supporting women. The organization provides arts and cultural programs to the diverse community of the Indianapolis area and works to preserve its historic property.
