Dr. Cameual Wright named 2024 Black History Month Trailblazer for outstanding contributions to healthcare

Dr. Cameual Wright, vice president and market chief medical officer for CareSource Indiana, has been selected as one of the distinguished 2024 Black History Month Trailblazers by Radio One. This recognition celebrates Dr. Wright's exceptional leadership and advocacy in health care, particularly her efforts to address the social determinants of health impacting maternal and infant care.

With a career spanning over 15 years in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Wright is a prominent figure in Indiana's health care landscape. Prior to her current role at CareSource, she served in various leadership positions, including chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology and president of the medical staff.

At CareSource, Dr. Wright plays a pivotal role in facilitating education, training and evaluation of medical and pharmacy policies while leading clinical initiatives to ensure high-quality health care for vulnerable populations. Her commitment to improving maternal and infant care has led her to advocate passionately for initiatives addressing the root causes of infant mortality and maternal mortality rates in the United States.

According to the Indiana Department of Health, 536 infants died before their first birthday in 2021 and Perinatal Risks are the top cause of infant mortality in Indiana. Additionally, the Non-Hispanic Black infant mortality rate was more than double the Non-Hispanic white rate. Dr. Wright's advocacy is crucial in changing these statistics.

In addition to her role at CareSource, Dr. Wright is actively involved in various community organizations and initiatives. She serves as a board member for About Special Kids (ASK), a committee member for Indiana Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative, and participates in the Disparities in Leadership Program. Dr. Wright's dedication extends beyond health care, as she also serves on the boards of organizations such as the American Red Cross, The Milk Bank and the American Diabetes Association.

Dr. Wright's educational background includes undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan, and a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University. Her affiliations include the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Indiana State Medical Association and the Indiana University Business of Medicine Alumni Board.

"I am deeply honored to be recognized as a Black History Month Trailblazer,” said Dr. Wright. “This acknowledgment reaffirms my dedication to championing health care equity and striving for better outcomes for those who need it most."

Dr. Cameual Wright's achievements will be showcased on-air and online starting the week of Feb. 5, 2024, as part of the Black History Month celebrations organized by Radio One.
