Indiana Landmarks hosts free program on the history and significance of Juneteenth

On June 5, Indiana Landmarks welcomes Sam Collins III, Juneteenth historian and National Trust for Historic Preservation Advisor, to Indiana Landmarks Center for a special screening of the documentary Juneteenth: The Galveston Story, which Collins co-produced.

Following the program, Collins will join Fay Williams, Indianapolis and Galveston civil rights leader, and Olon Dotson, chair of Indiana Landmarks’ African American Landmarks Committee, on stage for a lively panel discussion on the history and significance of Juneteenth.

The oldest known celebration marking the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived on Galveston Island with word that the Civil War was over and enslaved people were free.

“Juneteenth, long celebrated in Texas and other states, is receiving a deserved increase in recognition in Indiana,” says Marsh Davis, president of Indiana Landmarks. “We are honored to welcome such respected national and local leaders to share their perspective on the profound relevance of the holiday.”

Tickets are free with RSVP at LegacyofJuneteenth.eventbrite.com or by calling 317-639-4534.
