Arts Council Features 40 Artists in Upcoming Show, Provides $10K Grants for Renewal

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Nearly 40 central Indiana artists are set to share their renewal explorations at the Arts Council’s Gallery 924 in June. Visitors can meet the artists and experience the vibrant journeys through the visual art, poetry, photos, books, music, and videos they created.

The most recent group of fellows includes author Dan Wakefield, painter Mab Graves, actor Ryan Artzberger, spoken word poet Tatjana Rebelle, and dancer Lalah Hazelwood.

The retrospective exhibition is part of the Arts Council’s Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship. This exhibition runs June 3 through July 21, featuring two First Friday receptions on June 3 and July 1 from 6-9 p.m.

Now in its 22nd year, the Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship awards forty $10,000 fellowships every other year to qualified artists or nonprofit arts administrators. The program is supported by Lilly Endowment Inc. The 2022-2023 application period runs from June 3 to July 17, 2022, and includes support and workshops from the Arts Council. The timeline and guidelines are available here.

This fellowship allows central Indiana artists and arts administrators the chance to seek renewal in ways that are unique to them and their work. It is up to each fellow to decide what renewal looks like.

“This is an opportunity for artists and arts administrators to take time off to be renewed. They don’t need to worry about work, creating, or the office. They simply need to focus on themselves. When the fellows have this space, they then continue making amazing things happen in Indianapolis,” said Ernest Disney-Britton, Vice President of Community Investment & Impact.

A key goal of the fellowship is to keep artists and administrators living in and engaged with Indianapolis and Central Indiana. More than 470 grants have been distributed since this program began in 1999.

“The process of renewal changes your brain. It’s so different from your normal state,” said Mirvia Eckert, a painter and 2020-2021 fellow who studied the Bomba dance and music to find renewal.

“This fellowship and renewal made me more confident in myself and in my work. This made me push myself. It’s been huge for me,” continued Eckert, who has since founded the Indy Latina Artistsgroup for artists to grow and connect.
