Tom Hirons IU Media School Intern Announced
Aspen Schopp is first recipient of IU Media School opportunity
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana University Media School senior Aspen Schopp has been named the first Tom Hirons IU Media School intern, an internship program made in partnership with the IU Media School in honor of Tom Hirons, founder of Hirons.
Schopp is a senior at Indiana University studying public relations and advertising. Her previous experience includes an internship with the Wonderlab Museum of Science, Technology and Health and participation in the PRSSA Bateman Case Study Competition.
“I am thrilled just to have an internship at Hirons, so also becoming the first Tom Hirons IU Media School intern is an honor. I’m excited for the opportunity to work with Tom and to have access to such a unique experience,” Schopp says.
The Tom Hirons IU Media School Internship includes the opportunity to experience agency operations and engage with community leaders, with an emphasis on individuals or organizations with which Tom Hirons has had a significant relationship. Hirons will offer the Tom Hirons IU Media School Internship every semester to an IU student pursuing a career in advertising or public relations.
“Tom Hirons is a very active alumnus who taught advertising and branding classes for us for nearly 20 years and has returned to campus in recent years to connect with students at various career fairs and networking events. We regularly bring groups of students to visit Hirons so they can see what agency life is like, and we are thrilled to now have a formalized internship program where our students will get hands-on experience in the industry,” said Emily Harrison, director of development and alumni relations for the IU Media School.
Before founding his agency 40 years ago, Hirons earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from IU in 1975 and studied advertising under the mentorship of School of Journalism professor and industry giant Philip Ward Burton. He also taught at IU Bloomington for more than 18 years as the J. Stewart Riley endowed chair for the School of Journalism and as a visiting lecturer for the Department of Telecommunications, both precursors to The Media School.
