According to Meredith, it was the first time the two have stopped and stepped back to honor the growth of the business. “You sometimes forget to pat yourself on the back because you’re to busy working so hard toward your goals.”
Hard work and determination is exactly what the two put into Posh Petals from the first day they opened their store back in July 2004. While no strangers to the floral industry (they met working in a flower shop while Meredith was in college), they were, however, strangers to being business owners.
The two had stayed in touch after Meredith graduated from IU and pursued what she called “a real job.” Their shared passion for flowers led Erika to ask her friend about owning a flower shop together some day. That “some day” came quickly. Six months after toasting the idea over beers at the Red Key Tavern, they opened the doors to Posh Petals. Ten years later, they toasted again – to the success of one of Indy’s premier locally owned floral companies.
Meredith admits they didn’t know what they were doing at first. “To be honest, we didn’t know how to run a business. We took it day by day and mistake by mistake.”
Their partnership works well as both bring different skills and talents to the table. Erika’s strength is creative design, while Meredith’s forte is business development. The two complement each other - leading to the company’s success.
As a member of the Indy Chamber, Meredith took advantage of networking events and programs, including the Women in Business Series, PowerNet and Ask the Expert panel discussions featuring other business owners. Meredith hopes to use her own experiences and involvement with the Indy Chamber to help other business owners succeed.
Meredith has been asked to join the Business Ownership Initiative’s Kauffman FastTrac series as a speaker, which she said she would gladly do. “I’ve always enjoyed networking and meeting new people – and the Indy Chamber gives me that opportunity tenfold.” Business Ownership Initiative is a program of the Indy Chamber.
Meredith and Erika love what they’re doing today and look forward to a long future of creating floral arrangements together. More corporate accounts, larger fundraising events, more work during the week, and possible satellite stores – those are just some of the ideas and opportunities that lie ahead for these two long-time friends and Women Business Enterprise (WBE)-certified business owners.
Posh Petals has been featured in Traditional Homes, GQ, Sophisticated Living, and more. In addition to offering custom made arrangements for weddings, celebrations, holiday, events, corporate, and everyday in-home design, their in-store eco friendly gift shop features local artists from around the Indianapolis area.
For the past 10 years, business at Posh Petals has been blooming in Broad Ripple and last week co-owners Meredith Fleming and Erika White celebrated their success with family, friends, employees, vendors and customers.
