INDIANAPOLIS – Quickly recognizing the unique challenges of working with and serving people in need with social distancing restrictions in place during the COVID-19 crisis, United Way of Central Indiana has made grants through its Technology Fund to support upgrades and enhancements for community-based organizations in Central Indiana.

With support from a work group comprised of board, staff and volunteers in the tech sector, United Way of Central invited community-based organizations (accredited prior to 2020) to submit applications and made grants totaling more than $525,000 to 48 organizations. Grants will be used to support the purchase of hardware, software, and conferencing systems necessary to continue effective operations and virtual programming to serve the community.

“We heard from the human services organizations that technology was proving to be a significant barrier to their staff’s ability to serve clients in this environment,” said Ann D. Murtlow, president and CEO of United Way of Central Indiana. “These grants dollars will go a long way to improve the infrastructure of community-based organizations, where it’s now critical to use the latest technology to creatively, effectively and safely serve the needs of children, adults, and families – now and well into the future.”

“We are so appreciative and grateful for this grant from United Way of Central Indiana,” said John Von Arx, president and CEO of Volunteers of America. “These funds will be so helpful in allowing us to further utilize and enhance technology to offer hope, restore dignity and transform the lives of our clients in these unprecedented times.”

The Technology Fund is made possible through grants from Lilly Endowment Inc.
