Tobias Leadership Center conference to feature financier and philanthropist David M. Rubenstein

INDIANAPOLIS – Financier and philanthropist David M. Rubenstein will speak in downtown Indianapolis at the Leadership Engagement & Discovery (LEAD) Conference, hosted February 8-9 by the Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence.

The 2018 LEAD Conference, entitled “Investing to Change the World by 2050,” will help business professionals, researchers and community leaders learn more about the quickly changing landscape of funding social impact ventures and building sustainable organizations.

Mr. Rubenstein is a co-founder and co-executive chairman of The Carlyle Group, one of the world’s largest private equity firms. Since its inception in 1987, the firm has grown to manage $174 billion from 31 offices around the world. Although Mr. Rubenstein presents around the world, this will be his first engagement in Indiana and a rare opportunity to learn from his investing experience.

Mr. Rubenstein is also the host of Bloomberg TV’s The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations. Now in its third season, the show explores successful leadership by talking with the most influential business people across the nation.

After graduating from the University of Chicago Law School, Mr. Rubenstein practiced law in New York for several years before serving as Chief Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments from 1975 through 1976. From 1977 to 1981, during the Carter Administration, Mr. Rubenstein was Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy.

Mr. Rubenstein serves as Chairman of the Boards of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Smithsonian Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a Fellow of the Harvard Corporation and a Trustee of the National Gallery of Art, the University of Chicago, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Institute for Advanced Study. Additionally, Mr. Rubenstein is President of the Economic Club of Washington and the Vice Chairman of the Board of the Brookings Institution. He serves on several other advisory boards across the world as well.

“We are honored to have David M. Rubenstein serve as keynote speaker at the LEAD Conference,” said Julie Manning Magid, executive and academic director of the Tobias Leadership Center and professor of business law at the Kelley School of Business. “His expertise on investing and leadership will give our conference attendees unique insight on evaluating ventures, building a sustainable organization and investing in a community through philanthropy.”

“There is a great deal of momentum around the social purpose of a business venture,” Magid noted. “More and more business leaders are noting that investing in organizations that measure and obtain a social purpose -- in industries such as education, agriculture and food sustainability, and health and biotech -- improves the world for future generations. We are developing and extending that concept through this conference.”

Other panels, presentations and workshops at the conference will feature topics such as: technology for social impact, impact investing, fintech, B Corps, policy initiatives concerning impact investing, as well as industry updates.

The LEAD Conference takes place February 8 and 9, at The Alexander Hotel in Indianapolis. Cost is $295 for all conference sessions and meals. The conference’s academic sponsors are the Kelley School of Business and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

The Tobias Leadership Center’s primary mission is to prepare seasoned leaders for continued success in both their careers and the organizations in which they serve.

The center promotes leadership in research and in action. It demonstrates leadership and disseminates knowledge through opportunities like its Tobias Fellows Program, the LEAD Conference and the Hazelett Forum.
