The Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority is adding weekend service for the Plainfield Workforce Connectors from Nov. 7, 2020, to Jan. 10, 2021.

E-commerce will be more important than ever this holiday season due to the pandemic, so Amazon, Walmart and other e-distribution centers in Plainfield are staffing up. CIRTA’s Workforce Connectors provide public transportation to job sites, picking up riders at IndyGo’s Route 8 stop on Bridgeport Road and circulating on two routes – North and South – through the industrial parks in Plainfield. The first bus of the day – the express – picks up riders at 5:15 a.m. at Washington and Delaware streets in downtown Indianapolis and heads directly to Plainfield with no stops.

“A workforce that shows up is the lifeblood of any business, and the Workforce Connectors are in place to remove transportation barriers so people can get to work,” said John Seber, CIRTA executive director.

The Plainfield Workforce Connectors has provided more than 18,500 trips so far this year, and nearly all of the riders live in Marion County. The service runs 7 days a week during the holiday season.

“It’s a win for the Marion County residents who need the jobs, and it’s a win for the Hendricks County employers who need a workforce,” added Seber. “During thee pandemic, we’ve maintained 100% service levels with no interruptions. The Connectors have helped our essential workers, as well as employers.”

All Workforce Connectors are sanitized and cleaned every morning and night, and passengers use mounted temperature scanners when boarding to ensure everyone’s safety.

According to the Town of Plainfield, more than 18,000 people commute into Plainfield every day to work. That’s almost equal to half of the town’s population of 34,000.

The Plainfield Economic Improvement District funds the Workforce Connectors, and CIRTA operates the service using private contractors.

Employers at distribution centers need seasonal workers to operate at peak capacity during the holidays. Routes, schedules and Plainfield job postings can be found at WorkforceConnector.com.

The fare to ride the Connectors is $1 each way. In addition to the two Plainfield Connectors, CIRTA also operates a Whitestown Workforce Connector to job sites in the AllPoints at Anson industrial park.
