Indianapolis Community Members Are Invited to Experience “Fences” at the Phalen Cultural Center

(Indianapolis, Indiana) - Indianapolis students, families and community members are invited to watch “Fences” on Saturday, April 30th at the Phalen Cultural Center. Tickets are FREE and to maintain safe distancing, seats are limited.

Set in the 1950s, "Fences" is the sixth in playwright August Wilson's ten-part "Pittsburgh Cycle.” Like all of the "Pittsburgh" plays, "Fences" explores the evolving African-American experience and examines race relations, among other themes. The play won the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 1987 Tony Award for Best Play.

As Far Eastside’s newest and most groundbreaking arts facility, the Phalen Cultural Center, located adjacent to James and Rosemary Phalen Leadership Academy [4352 N. Mitthoeffer Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46235] is a state-of-the-art building designed to be a powerhouse of diversity and creativity offering arts production, programming and a beautiful, safe space for the local community.

The Phalen Cultural Center is a first-class art and culture center for the Indianapolis community that works to spur people’s love of art and theater and is accessible to all residents,” said PLA Founder & CEO, Earl Martin Phalen. “The programming is designed to enhance the community's quality of life by providing enriching experiences to the Far Eastside at no cost to our scholars, families and community members. We work closely with many local and regional arts organizations and presenters who use this venue as a place to present performances, offer classes, and exhibit fine art. We encourage community members to stay tuned for much more to come from the Phalen Cultural Center.”

The Phalen Cultural Center has partnered with Mas Media 7 Production in its rendition of the classic stage play.

“August Wilson is our Shakespeare. He has a way of utilizing urban vernacular which adds to the texture in each of his characters,” said Fences Director, Mark Spencer. “We are looking forward to bringing FENCES to the Phalen Cultural Center in Indianapolis."

Doors will open on April 30th at 1:30PM and curtains will open at 2:00PM. Visit https://phalen.info/fences to reserve your FREE tickets.
