Franklin College to Host Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration

Franklin College invites the community to participate in a day of service and other activities honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 21, 2019.

The MLK Day of Service is a nationally recognized event. Organizers and participants use the day as a way to transform King’s life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities. Registration is required to participate in Franklin College’s MLK Day of Service, which will engage volunteers in activities at various locations in Franklin at various times. If interested in volunteering, email [email protected] or call (317) 738-8119.

In addition to the MLK Day of Service activities, the public is invited to participate in these celebratory campus events:

1 p.m. – Chapel Service, Richardson Chapel:  The Rev. Douglas W. Gray, pastor at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Franklin, will present, “Wake Up and Fulfill the Dream” as part of an ecumenical Christian worship service to honor the ministry legacy of the Rev. Dr. King.

3:15 p.m. – MLK Day Commemorative March: The march will begin west of the B.F. Hamilton Library at the Indiana Alpha Gazebo and end at the Richardson Chapel. The purpose of the march is to honor those who marched before to win the freedoms known today and with those who still struggle to have their freedoms recognized.

4 p.m. – MLK Day Convocation Lecture, Richardson Chapel: Cynthia M. Horner, writer, magazine editor and entertainment industry entrepreneur, will present a lecture titled “How the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Voice has Influenced the Hip-Hop Community and Raised Social Awareness to Millions of Young Voices.”

7 p.m. – Movie Showing of “The Hate U Give,” Richardson Chapel.

 All events are free and open to the public.
