Reusable Bags, Not Paper, Will Help Solve the Environmental Challenge of Single-use Bags

Indianapolis, IN – March 13, 2020  This Earth Day Global Gifts will begin phasing out their paper shopping bags at all four store locations in Indiana and Ohio. This comes as Global Gifts announces a new fee for their single-use paper bags.

The purpose of the new bag policy is to encourage positive, environmentally sound choices. The long-term goal is to reduce the number of single use bags currently being used.

Global Gifts will continue to make their paper bags available, however 25 cents will be charged for each bag. They hope to convert customers to reusable bags, thereby eventually eliminating the bag fee all together. Meanwhile, the amount collected will support the nonprofit’s Fair Trade mission.

With the announcement, Global Gifts outlined its position:

As members of the Fair Trade Federation we actively consider the implications of our decisions on the environment and promote the responsible use of resources. For years, we have avoided using single-use plastic bags, so phasing out our single-use paper bags, seemed like the logical next step. By implementing a bag fee, we hope to transition customers to reusable bags. If we can make that happen in all our stores, it will have a positive environmental impact for years to come.

When stores routinely hand out an unlimited number of single-use disposable bags, we end up with a lot of unnecessary waste. Moving away from our reliance on single-use bags is a common-sense approach to discourage wastefulness and reduce the overall negative impact to the environment.

Global Gifts has always put an emphasis on eco-friendly production practices. Building sustainable supply chains requires collective action from everyone – our artisan partners and suppliers, our customers, other businesses, and the general public.

On Earth Day, Global Gifts will kick off their Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) Campaign to educate and encourage local communities to reduce and reuse single use bags.
