So, what is Form-Based Code?
They are another way of looking at how communities develop that concentrates more on physical form than controlling land uses. Form-based codes (FBCs) seek to restore time-tested forms of urbanism (e.g., think grid streets, robust downtowns, housing variety, mixed-use, and walkability). They give unity, efficient organization, social vitality, and walkability to our cities, towns, and neighborhoods. We should all be looking at this as an alternative to the way we do business currently in the use of land and the design of how it fits together. FBC is not just for downtowns or neighborhoods; it is a flexible tool for retrofitting areas, specifically urban arterial streets or corridors. It is bike/pedestrian-friendly, transit-friendly, cost-friendly, health-friendly, and accessibility friendly.
