Browning Davis, the construction joint venture formed by Browning and Davis & Associates to construct Innovation 1 at 16 Tech, received the Mayor’s Diversity Above and Beyond Award from Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett at the Indiana Black Expo Mayor’s Breakfast on July 12.

Browning Davis was recognized for its efforts to involve minority businesses in Innovation 1 construction. The joint venture nearly doubled the desired level of minority participation, with 50 percent of the firms working on Phase One of the building being XBEs – the collective term for Minority Business Enterprises, Women Business Enterprises, Veterans Business Enterprises and/or Disabled-Owner Business Enterprises – compared to a City goal of 27%.

“There is no reason to accept a low goal when reaching higher delivers this kind of community impact,” said Browning Project Manager David McMath. “This project shows what’s possible when you focus on building relationships rather than simply building buildings.”

Innovation 1 is a 120,000-square-foot, $30 million structure. It is fully leased, and tenants will be the Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI), the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership (CICP) and its talent and industry initiatives, and researchers with the Indiana University School of Medicine’s newly established Indiana Center for Regenerative Medicine, a molecular therapeutics program and technology incubator.
