Journeyman and apprentice electricians. Pharmacy technicians. Certified nursing technicians. Computer numerical control (CNC) machinists.  Preparing a local workforce to fill these in-demand skilled jobs is at the core of PowerTrain Indy.

Operated by EmployIndy and funded with tax increment financing (TIF) funds through the City of Indianapolis, PowerTrain Indy is a customized training program available to businesses and residents located in and around downtown Indianapolis.

Twenty-five local employers are engaged in PowerTrain Indy, which provides businesses with training dollars, customized training development and hiring expertise. Already, 118 local residents have been enrolled in PowerTrain Indy training, with more than half of those residents actively participating in training and a third placed in skilled jobs with local businesses.

Training grants are available to businesses located in Downtown Indianapolis, the immediate revitalization area that surrounds it, including Mass Ave and 16 Tech, and neighborhoods such as Haughville, Douglas Park, Riverside Park, Garfield Park, Martindale-Brightwood, Holy Cross and United Northwest Area (UNWA).

Eligible businesses must have job openings and commit to fill those openings either by advancing current employees or hiring new employees who successfully complete On-the-Job training, customized training, or occupational skills training. Training will result in industry-recognized credentials for in-demand careers in the healthcare, information technology, advanced manufacturing, logistics, clean tech, and life sciences areas.

Because training is customized and developed in coordination with the employer,it will meet the specific talent demands of each participating company. Training is available for a host of specialties, such as computer support specialists, logistics and materials management, production technicians, certified nursing assistants, and pharmacy technicians.
