Through the work of advocacy, economic development, and membership, the Indy Chamber has a wealth of communication needs. From empowering internal stakeholders to fostering strong external relationships with the business community, there is a need for clear, concise communication.
The Senior Director of Marketing & Communications supports the strategic planning, implementation, and measurement specific to marketing and communications for various departments within the Indy Chamber. This role leads in development of support staff on the MARCOM team. Additionally, the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications is a member of the Indy Chamber leadership team responsible for developing, integrating, and implementing strategic communications.
The goal is to advance the organization’s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. The Senior Director of Communications will be responsible for Indy Chambers’s varied and integrated communications products and services including newsletters and other print publications; web, e-news and other online communications; media and public relations; and marketing.
Requirements
- Provides strategic direction, project management leadership, and outreach activities to drive outcomes toward storytelling on behalf of the Indy Chamber and the region.
- Advances the engagement of and participation in the regional economic development strategy for the Indy Chamber, Accelerate Indy.
- Provides strategic leadership to the Indy Chamber’s communications and marketing efforts by developing, integrating, and implementing cohesive marketing and communications aimed at increasing investor engagement and enhancing awareness of the Chamber’s impact in the Indy Region.
- Nurtures relationships across the Indy Chamber to support internal teams as well as external stakeholders relevant to those specific projects.
- Maintains an active awareness and knowledge of community issues to better relate to business interests, media interests, and Indy Chamber initiatives.
- Oversee the progress and development for the Event Marketing Manager, Senior Manager of Stakeholder Management, and Graphic Design & Digital Marketing Manager.
- Develops short- and long-term goals and key performance indicators for staff. Ensures an effective culture of high performance and development among direct reports.
- Defines – rooted in research, best practice, and community voice – a design and communication strategy and a vision of success; and implements various design and communication standards within the Indy Chamber’s practices and initiatives.
- Oversees work planning and communication for a suite of initiatives (e.g. Indy Partnership, Develop Indy, and Business Advocacy), each of which incorporates multiple projects, components, and stakeholders.
- Develop strategic and consistent communication and feedback mechanisms to ensure the Indy Chamber can align, mobilize, and report on strategic initiatives to our city, stakeholders, and business community.
- Collaborate with teams to compile data, narratives, and visuals that effectively communicate the organization’s goals, achievements, and strategic initiatives.
- Responsible for integrating the Indy Chamber’s complex business units’ efforts, programs, and successes into public relations activities to ensure that the Indy Chamber is well-positioned with an excellent reputation, and a compelling narrative.
- Responsible for the strategic development of regional and national marketing campaigns to promote the Indy Chamber business units and initiatives including, but not limited to, Indy Partnership, Business Ownership Initiative, and Accelerate Indy.
- Prepare and manage board materials for the various volunteer leadership meetings throughout the organization.
- Ensure the quality and consistency of all outgoing materials, including grant proposals, presentations, media pitches and releases, thought leadership articles, print collateral, and digital communications.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, or public relations. The ideal candidate will have 5-7 years of experience and will demonstrate the ability to create strategic plans, implement multifaceted communication plans, and interact with various stakeholders.

This position requires a wide understanding of and demonstrated success in community development, communications, and strategic planning—particularly in the context of economic growth, overarching brand management, and stakeholder coordination. An ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in strategic communications, media relations, and developing collaborative partnerships. The position requires an ability to develop strategic communication plans that align stakeholders, develop foundational, key messaging, mobilize tactical assets to drive outreach efforts, and ongoing reporting on those efforts to help the Indy Chamber’s leadership and stakeholders understand how marketing and communications are driving the organization’s business goals.
