A coalition of regional economic development organizations should be formed to foster communication, marketing, planning and the use of economic development incentives across the region.
In March 1993, individuals representing chambers of commerce, economic development organizations, regional businesses, and educational institutions met to explore ways to enhance the competitive advantage of the Indianapolis metropolitan region in attracting new businesses and the growth of existing ones. Urban regions around the nation and throughout the world are consolidating their strengths, minimizing differences between counties, and developing coordinated polices to enhance their effectiveness in attracting business investment. The Indianapolis metropolitan region must follow suit to capitalize on our assets as well.
Recently, a coalition was formed which changed the Indianapolis Economic Development Council to the Indiana Regional Economic Development Partnership (IREDP). IREDP is now the economic development "brain trust" for the central Indiana region. Such efforts allow the nine-county region to collaborate on a vision that will result in economic prosperity in the metropolitan area.
The Central Indiana Chamber of Commerce Alliance (CICCA) is a united effort of twenty-seven chambers in the nine-county region designed to address issues of importance to the entire region. Additionally, the Indianapolis comprehensive plan is thinking regionally for the first time.
What the Greater Indianapolis Chamber is doing:
- We are a member of the Central Indiana Chamber of Commerce Alliance (CICCA), and have a staff person to coordinate this effort.
- We actively participate in meetings that address regionalism.
- We support the development of a regional plan being developed by the Indiana Economic Development Council.
- We were the driving force behind MAGIC (Metropolitan Association Greater Indianapolis Communities), an organization that moved the nine-county area to begin thinking regional.
- We support the creation of a Regional Transit Alliance and have testified before the City-County Council in support of the RTA's passage.
