"...we have clients throughout the US and the three hour difference makes it difficult to handle our West Coast clients. We have to stagger shifts to offer some coverage...." -- Al Brown, President, Micromini Associates, Inc.
"It's very frustrating to our clients to have to be aware of what time it is here. I don't think people outside of business realize how this state is looked at as almost third-world by the rest of the business community in this regard." -- Tim Dugger, President, SearchPro Group of America, Ltd.
The Indiana General Assembly must adopt Daylight Saving Time (DST) because of its positive impact on both expanded commerce and individual/family quality of life.
Observance of DST would result in several measurable benefits for residents of central Indiana. For businesses and those dependent on financial markets, the confusion caused by being on the same time as the eastern United States for half of the year and the central United States for the other six months, can be quite costly. One-third to one-half of work day communication time can be lost, not to mention causing confusion for customers. Travel and shipping services must adjust or reprint arrival and departure times to account for time changes, and sometimes employee work shifts change altogether. Other benefits of shifting Indiana to DST are reduced energy costs, reduced crime and traffic accidents, improved flight schedules, increased retail sales, business development and recreational time.
Shifting Indiana to DST would significantly improve our economy and quality of life. And it does not cost the state a penny!
The Chamber was active during past sessions of the Indiana General Assembly to pass a law for Indiana to adopt DST. While the legislature was reluctant to pass the law, it did pass a resolution to study the issue. Later, however, the legislative leadership decided against any further study of DST, and the issue remains on hold with no action.
